SVTU Receives Awards for Conservation

SVTU recognized for building partnerships with IWLA

Seneca Valley TU (SVTU) has been actively engaged in building a mutually beneficial partnership with the Rockville Chapter of the Izaak Walton League. SVTU utilizes the facilities of the Rockville IWLA for meetings and special events. And, in turn, Rockville-IWLA members access the fly fishing expertise of SVTU members and have priority enrollment for special events (Fly Fishing 101 and fly tying courses) sponsored by SVTU. Our partnership has extended into shared stream restoration volunteer time and joint participation in educational events.

The Rockville Chapter of IWLA nominated SVTU for the  Maryland Division “Honor Roll Award” that recognizes the “outstanding achievements in conservation in cooperation with Chapters of the Isaak Walton League of America.”

In addition to the State recognition, the nomination was submitted to the National IWLA for consideration. SVTU was awarded the IWLA National “Honor Roll Award” in “recognition of outstanding work performed in the fields of conservation, public information and publicity in keeping with the League’s goals”. SVTU was honored to receive these awards presented at the Rockville IWLA meeting on September 9, 2016.

SVTU is appreciative of both of these awards from IWLA and hold it as evidence that the beneficial partnership developed with the IWLA Rockville Chapter will continue to thrive.

SVTU Member Honored by Mid-Atlantic Council

Charles August Receives AwardIn 2015, Dr. Charles August, SVTU member, was recognized at the annual Banquet of the Mid-Atlantic Council of Trout Unlimited, the Council that represents SVTU. Charles received a Citizen Recognition Award for his contribution to facilitating the quality of the trout fishing experience in Maryland.

Charles was honored for the multi-year effort invested to organize, lead, and conduct a series of fly tying classes offered to the public by the Seneca Valley TU Chapter, with the cooperation of the Isaak Walton League of America, Rockville Chapter.

Almost single handedly, Charles established a successful fly tying course for Seneca Valley TU, bringing an important part of the fly fishing experience to a new group of anglers. His efforts to organize and lead the fly tying course for the past several years resulted in almost 50 participants learning the art of fly tying—from novice to more advanced levels. Because of his passion, Charles consistently attracted master fly tiers to engage and teach members of our Chapter and class participants. For his efforts to improve the quality of the trout fishing experience (nothing like catching a fish on a fly you tied), Charles was a deserving recipient.

The Seneca Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited (SVTU) is a local voice of National Trout Unlimited.
