Shad Fishing the Potomac and Other Nearby Waters
Speaker: Dan Davala from the Orvis Retail Fly Shop in Arlington, VA
Dan, an expert on flyfishing for shad, will give us the scoop on where to go, especially the Potomac near Chain Bridge, what tackle to use, and his various techniques for catching shad in their annual runs up the rivers. Dan will show us methods for both single handed and spey rods. With the warm winter we’ve had, Dan says that the runs should be early this year - that means maybe March - so get your tackle ready now! Flyfishing (and spinning) can be very good - not only for shad, but also stripers and SMB - from Fletcher’s Landing to upstream of Chain Bridge, and it’s really close to home.:)
April 25 - The Best Smallmouth Bass Fishing on the Potomac River
Speaker: John Mullican, MD DNR Regional Fisheries Manager in Thurmont MD
John, a recognized guru on smallmouth and Musky on the Potomac, will impart both his professional fisheries biologist and local fisherman knowledge to us on flyfishing/spinning for smallmouth on the Potomac. He will talk about tackle, specific techniques, and the best local locations to catch smallmouth. This is one meeting you cannot miss if you are into smallmouth!
May 23 - Kayak and Canoe Fishing the Bay
Speaker: Capt. Mike Critzer, Coastalflyfisher and SVTU member.
For many of us, you know the excitement of Mike’s guided boat trips to the Bay. But now he is going to expose us to the wonderful world of flyfishing the Bay from a canoe or kayak. Mike has recently been ferrying canoe/kayak fishing groups to selected areas of the Bay for some real fun in the sun! He will have lots of photos, detailed Bay charts, tackle, and a Bay-suitable kayak to demonstrate how this kind of fishing is best performed. Maybe even also some tips on kayak fishing the nearby upper Potomac. Come join us and explore another kind of Bay fishing.
