SEPTEMBER 23 CHAPTER MEETING - GREAT PROGRAM PLUS WE ARE MEETING AT A NEW LOCATION

Monday, September 7th, 2009
  • SUMMER IS OVER BUT OUR CHAPTER MEETINGS RESUME!Our next meeting is scheduled for WEDNESDAY September 23.The program for this meeting is “Fall Trout Fishing in Maryland”" presented by Jay Sheppard.

When the water temps start to fall, the trout put on a big feeding binge to lay on fat for the upcoming winter and spawning in the case of the browns and brookies.  This surge in feeding is also coupled to the last of summer’s bountiful menu provided to the trout by mother nature.  From now until just after the leaves drop, we can expect to find some very hungry trout on all the better trout waters here in Maryland.  Some fish will be looking for real meat to inhale and others may spend their time sipping myriads of tiny insects going past them.  Jay Sheppard will be describing some special tactics to entice wary trout to the end of your line, along with some handouts on some flies that have proved reliable at this time of the year on our Maryland waters.

Jay is the Vice Chair for Resources for the Mid-Atlantic Council of TU, as well as a past president of the Potomac-Patuxent Chapter of TU.  He has been fishing for over 65 years and for over half of that time for trout in Maryland with a fly rod.  Although he retired from the US Fish and Wildlife Service in early 1995, he regrets that he has not been able to fish every day since then.  Jay has been spending a lot of time helping TU to protect our important resources here in the State— from Savage River and the North Branch to the Gunpowder and streams in-between.

PLEASE NOTE NEW LOCATION FOR THE CHAPTER MEETINGS!!!!!!Our new location is actually a location we met at a few years ago.ISAAC WALTON LEAGUE OF AMERICA (IWLA): ROCKVILLE CHAPTER / CLUBHOUSE. 18301 WARING STATION ROAD; GERMANTOWN, MD. 20874. 301-972-1645Social Hour commences at 7:00 PM, with the meeting and program starting at 8:00 PM.Stop by and meet your fellow members and enjoy what is always a great presentation.

Chapter meetings for Sep 2008 - May 2009

Friday, July 18th, 2008

Our next Chapter meeting is Wednesday, September 24, 2008.  We meet in the Up-County Government Facility at Middlebrook and Route 118.  The meeting is from 7:00-9:15; we spend the first hour just talking among ourselves and meeting new members and guests, have a very brief business meeting at 8:00, and the speaker starts at 8:15.

The speaker for the September 24 meeting will be from Southern Cross Outfitters.  I do not have a title for his talk yet, but it will be on fishing large streams for big trout, as they run trips to Patagonia in South America.  Some of the topics we expect to cover at future meetings – scheduled for Dec 3, Jan 28, March 25, and May 27 — include fishing for steelhead, fly tying, and an update on the Beaver Creek project.

If you are a member but haven’t come to one of our meetings, please stop in, as we would love to meet and talk with you.  Our members cover much of Montgomery County and Washington County, range from beginners to expert fisherman/woman, and we fish all types of water, with both flies and spinning gear.

Drop me a note at stanoaks@gmail.com, if you have a question or a suggestion for a future program.

Hope to see you at a meeting.
