SVTU Fly Tying:  2012

The Seneca Valley Chapter 369 of Trout Unlimited will again combine with the Rockville Chapter of the Izaak Walton League to sponsor a season of fly tying.

Sessions will be held on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30 PM in the Clubhouse of the Rockville IWL at 18301 Waring Station Road, Germantown.

Three, weekly, introductory sessions will be held in January and early February, 2012, which will be directed to beginners.  Following these sessions, 6 every-other-weekly sessions will be held for more experienced tiers.

Curriculum for Beginners:  The first session for beginning fly tiers or those who just want to refresh their skills will start on Tuesday, January 24, 2012.  Vices, tools, and materials will be provided.  The first session will consist of an introduction to fly tying nomenclature, the anatomy of a hook, establishing a “thread base”, and, finally, using ultra chenille to tie the “Green Weenie” fly.

The second session, will be held on January 31st and will introduce tiers to “dubbing” and the tying of  “Walt’s Worm”—an imitation of a crane fly larva as well as the starting point for tying a number of nymph patterns.

The third session will be held on February 7th and will introduce new tiers to using marabou and hackle feathers as well as chenille to tie the “Wooly Bugger”.

The sessions for beginners will be taught by SVTU members Charles August and Dale Thatcher.

Sessions for experienced tiers will begin on February 14th and will be held subsequently on February 28th, March 13th and 27th, April 10th and finally April 24th.  Each session will be led by a “guru” who will introduce tiers to some favorite patterns.  In past years, “gurus” have included Leslie Gollehon tying very small flies, John Lachin tying the muskrat nymph, Vic Ezerski spinning deer hair, Tom Wirfs tying patterns for warm water fish, Marc Rogers tying shad flies, and Jason Andrick tying his favorite nymphs.

There is no charge either for the introductory sessions for beginners or for the sessions for more experienced tiers.  “Gurus” who provide materials for the flies they will be tying will be reimbursed.

Members who are planning to attend some or all of the sessions should register their names, email addresses and telephone numbers with Charles August, email address [csaugust@comcast.net] or call him at 240-401-8669.

Start off the new year right! Come to the January 25th SVTU Chapter Meeting.
